Will this be the first Metallica album I’ve purchased since the black album?

Interested to find out.

I am liking the sound of this. I have to hear more before I make a purchase decision though.

I had to but kill em all the other day because I couldn't get hit the lights, four horseman, jump in the fire, and seek and destroy out of my head. Hopefully it's as thrashy as that.

This is VERY Black Album-ish. I like it.

A long time fan and thrash musician’s opinion:

Their guitar tone had going bad since Black. Got back from it’s lowest point in DM, but definitely dropped again. No mids and for sure no bottom end at all. Basically opposite of the Justice album. The bass drum sounds sounds like a a counter’s ticking device. Helps hear the hits but it’s waaaay too much. In Justice, the bass drum wanted to destroy the sub woofers. Here, it sounds like they’ll make the tweeters work hard. The vocals are way to high. It seemed like the solo was going to keep going but got edited hard. On top, it wasn’t very good. Never felt Kirk-y. Last but not least, 3 minutes and change? One of the shortest Metallica songs if not the THE shortest Metallica songs ever. It was a good and fast heavy metal song, but far for thrash. All in all it felt like incomplete.

I can't really argue with any of your points. Truth be told, old Metallica is probably gone for good.

Dude, these guys are in their 50s. I got into Metallica in the late ‘80s, and I sure as hell can’t do all of the things I could when I was in my teens. And, just like them, my tastes have changed since then too.

I understand all that indeed, but bands like Exodus, Kreator, and Slayer are still kicking some major thrash ass. I guess i’m looking at this all wrong hoping the kings of thrash would... well, thrash! By that of course I mean the actual sound of the instruments not the composition. It’s a good song for sure, but the instrument tones are light beer compared to the hard whiskey of Justice or Puppets

Slayer today is very different from Slayer in the ‘80s. Listen to World Painted Blood, then Raining Blood.

I’ll say what nobody else is. Metallica was my favorite band of all time until about 6 months ago. Megadeth now is my favorite band. That is because their newest album Dystopia is the single best modern offering in the traditional heavy metal style. Take a listen and be amazed.
